Is my text sent to an AI when I use Explain?

Section titled “Is my text sent to an AI when I use Explain?”

Only when you click Explain: the selected text (up to 1,500 characters) is sent to Anthropic’s Claude API to write the explanation. The Chat tab also uses it (see “How does the Chat tab work?”). Translating, the dictionary and My words do not use this AI.

The add-on only asks for what it needs: to read and change the document it is open in (to read your selection and insert translations), to show its sidebar, to connect to translation, dictionary, speech and AI services, and to see your email address (to link a Pro subscription to your account). It cannot open your other documents.

Text is sent only when you use a feature: selected text to Google Translate when you translate; words and short phrases to Microsoft Translator for the dictionary, example sentences and readings; the looked-up word to Tatoeba for example sentences; words and sentences you play to Google Cloud Text-to-Speech; and the text you choose to explain, or the lines you write in the Chat tab (with the last few chat turns, and the selected text if you ask to talk about it), to Anthropic’s Claude. The chat history stays in your sidebar and is not stored by the add-on. In speaking practice, your voice is recognised by your browser’s own speech service; the add-on does not keep your recordings. Your language settings, My words and daily usage counts are stored with your Google account in the add-on’s storage. Anonymous usage statistics (which features are used, language pairs and your country) are also counted; they never include your text or email. See “Does the add-on collect usage statistics?” If you turn on email reminders, your email address, time zone, interface language, last document and the number of words due each day (not the words) are sent to our reminder service, which sends the emails; turning reminders off removes that summary.

Yes, anonymous statistics only, to learn which features help learners and which languages to improve. We count events such as opening the sidebar, translating, looking up a word, saving a word, finishing a review and viewing plans, together with the language pair, your plan (Free or Pro) and the interface language. Your country is worked out from your computer’s time zone (for example Asia/Ho_Chi_Minh means Vietnam); your IP address, city and precise location are never used. The statistics never include the text you translate, the words you save, your name or your email: you are identified only by a random-looking code that cannot be turned back into your account. They are stored in Google Analytics.
