Translation works between more than 130 languages, in any direction. The dictionary works for every pair, directly: pairs with English use Microsoft’s dictionary, and other pairs (for example Japanese > Vietnamese) and idioms or set phrases it does not have (for example “brick and mortar”) are looked up by AI. Only if that is unavailable is a pair looked up through English and marked “via English”. Example sentences come from Tatoeba for many language pairs; when there is no complete sentence, AI writes some and the list says so. Pronunciation (text-to-speech) is available for about 55 languages, and Latin-script readings (romaji, pinyin, Korean romanization, Cyrillic and more) for about 36 languages.

How do I see romaji, pinyin or how a word is read?

Section titled “How do I see romaji, pinyin or how a word is read?”

For languages not written in Latin letters (Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Russian, Thai, Arabic, Hindi and others) the add-on shows a reading in italics automatically under the word in the dictionary, next to each meaning and under example sentences. For a translated passage, click “Show reading” under the translation to see the reading of the source text and of the translation. Japanese is shown in romaji (not furigana) and Chinese in pinyin with tones.
